UK Manufactured Beaded Lead Wire — Trawler net, Curtain & Drapery Hem Weights
Heaps, Arnold & Heaps Ltd manufactures beaded lead wire at our Rotherham facility for the UK theatre, hospitality, interior design and soft furnishings trades. With over 250 years of lead manufacturing experience, we produce beaded lead wire in standard weights from 14g to 100g per meter — supplied cotton-sleeved or bare, on coils for small orders or industrial bobbins for production.
Beaded lead wire is the traditional standard for weighting fishing trawler nets, curtain hems, ensuring drapes hang straight, fold cleanly and resist movement from draughts, footfall and stage activity. The flexible bead-and-link construction allows the weight to follow the curtain’s drape and corners without stiffening the fabric.

Choosing the Right Weight Per Meter
The correct beaded lead wire weight depends on the fabric, curtain length and intended application. As a rough guide:
Lightweight Drapes (14g – 27g per meter)
For voiles, nets, sheers, light cotton curtains and decorative drapes where the weight should be felt but not visible. Suits domestic curtain making, lightweight interior installations and decorative soft furnishings.
- 14g/m — finest nets and voiles
- 22g/m — light domestic curtains and sheers
- 27g/m — medium-weight domestic curtains and pelmets
Mid-Weight Curtains (35g – 50g per metre)
For lined domestic curtains, hotel and hospitality curtains, blackout drapes and lighter contract work. Provides positive hem control without overloading the fabric.
- 35g/m — lined domestic curtains
- 45g/m — hotel curtains and lined drapes
- 50g/m — heavier hospitality and contract curtains
Heavy Drapes & Stage Curtains (63g – 100g per metre)
For theatre stage drapes, heavy blackout curtains, marquee skirting and large-format drapery where significant weight is required to control fabric movement.
- 63g/m — heavy lined curtains and small stage drapes
- 75g/m — full-height theatre drapes and venue curtains
- 98g/m — heavy stage curtains and main house tabs
- 100g/m — large-format stage and venue installations
For applications outside this range — extra-fine for couture work or extra-heavy for unusual stage requirements — bespoke weights are manufactured to order.
Cotton-Sleeved vs Bare Beaded Lead Wire
We supply beaded lead wire in two principal formats:
Cotton-Sleeved Beaded Lead Wire
The beaded wire is encased in a continuous cotton tape sleeve. This is the standard for hand-sewn curtain making, theatre wardrobe departments and quality interior installations:
- Easier to handle and sew by hand
- Protects fabric from direct contact with the lead beads
- Reduces noise from beads moving inside the hem
- Sleeve can be slip-stitched directly to the lining or hem
- Traditional finish expected in heritage and high-end work
Bare Beaded Lead Wire
The lead bead chain supplied without cotton encasement. Standard for high-volume machine-sewn production:
- Feeds straight from bobbin into curtain hem during machine sewing
- Lower cost per metre for bulk production
- Suits contract and hospitality production lines
- Polyester or alternative sleeving available to order
Packaging — Coils & Industrial Bobbins
Coils
Small to medium quantities supplied on coils suitable for hand cutting and small-batch curtain making. Standard for theatre wardrobe, interior trade and craft use.
Industrial Bobbins
Production volumes supplied on industrial bobbins matched to the customer’s hemming machine or feed system. Standard for contract curtain manufacturers and high-volume soft furnishings producers.
- Bobbin size matched to customer machine specification
- Consistent feed tension across the full bobbin
- Bulk pricing on multi-bobbin orders
Beaded Lead Wire Applications
Theatre & Stage Drapes
Beaded lead wire is the traditional standard for theatre stage curtain weighting — used in main house tabs, traverse curtains, blackout drapes, masking legs and borders. The weight controls movement during scene changes, prevents draughts from disturbing the drape line, and ensures clean hanging on tall stage curtains.
- Theatre stage drape manufacturers
- Venue refurbishment and dressing contractors
- Opera house and concert hall curtain production
- School and community theatre installations
- Film and television studio drapery
Hotel, Hospitality & Contract Curtains
Premium hotel curtains, conference centre drapes and contract hospitality work all use beaded lead wire to maintain a high-quality drape line over the life of the curtain. Specified by:
- Contract curtain manufacturers supplying the hospitality sector
- Hotel refurbishment specialists
- Conference and event venue contractors
- Cruise ship interior outfitters
Interior Design & Bespoke Curtain Making
Independent curtain makers, interior designers and bespoke soft furnishings workshops use beaded lead wire as standard for any quality curtain installation:
- Bespoke curtain making workshops
- Interior design studios providing curtain installation
- Heritage property curtain restoration
- Soft furnishings and pelmet makers
Marquee, Event & Exhibition Drapery
Marquee skirting, event drapery and exhibition curtains use beaded lead wire to control fabric movement in outdoor and semi-outdoor environments where wind and draught movement would otherwise disturb the drape:
- Marquee hire companies producing in-house drapery
- Event production companies
- Exhibition stand fabric specialists
- Wedding and corporate event dressing
Domestic Curtain Making
Beaded lead wire is also supplied in smaller quantities to craft retailers and online curtain-making suppliers for the domestic market, where home sewers use it for hemming lined curtains and pelmets.
